18 Sep Honouring the Journey of Others
In our desire to help those we love, it’s natural to feel compelled to guide them away from hardship. Yet Islam teaches us that every soul is on a divinely ordained journey, shaped by personal trials, choices, and the wisdom of Allah ﷻ. Each person must walk their own path, make their own decisions, and learn through experience.
The Qur’an reminds us: “Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills.” (Surah Al-Qasas, 28:56) This verse affirms that guidance is ultimately in the hands of Allah. Our role is not to control, but to support with sincerity, patience, and compassion.
While watching someone struggle can be painful, we must remember that growth often comes through hardship. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ exemplified this balance: he advised with gentleness, respected autonomy, and never imposed change. True transformation comes from within, through reflection, repentance, and sincere turning to Allah.
Each person is shaped by unique experiences. What moves one heart may leave another untouched. This is why our paths differ: each tailored by divine wisdom to nurture our growth. To honour this, here are some practical steps we can take:
1. Make Du’a for Them
Turn to Allah and ask Him to guide, protect, and bless the person you’re concerned about. Du’a reflects our trust in Allah’s plan and is a powerful act of love.
2. Offer Advice When Invited
If someone seeks your counsel, respond with humility and kindness. Share your experiences without imposing your views. Speak from the heart, not from ego.
3. Practice Sabr (Patience)
Remind yourself that Allah’s timing is perfect. Patience allows space for others to grow and for us to trust in divine wisdom.
4. Be Present Without Judgment
Sometimes, simply being there – listening without criticism – can be more impactful than any advice. Your presence can offer comfort and stability.
5. Model the Values You Wish to Share
Live your own journey with integrity and faith. Often, people are inspired by what they observe more than what they’re told.
6. Respect Their Autonomy
Recognize that every individual is accountable before Allah for their own choices: “And every soul earns not [blame] except against itself.” (Surah Al-An’am, 6:164) Give them space to reflect, make mistakes, and grow.
7. Celebrate Their Progress
Acknowledge their efforts and milestones, even if they differ from your expectations. Encouragement fosters confidence and strengthens relationships.
When we honour the journeys of others, even when they differ from our own, we embody the Islamic values of mercy, humility, and tawakkul (trust in Allah). We become companions on the journey, not directors of it. And in doing so, we deepen our own understanding of what it means to walk a path of faith.
