22 Apr The Weight of Small Steps
Bismillah
We often imagine growth as something dramatic – a breakthrough moment, a life‑changing decision, a sudden transformation. But in reality, most change happens quietly, through small steps that feel almost invisible.
Think of prayer. It is not one salah that transforms a person, but the rhythm of five prayers every day, repeated over years. Each bow, each pause, each whispered dua is a step. The same is true in personal growth. It is not one grand effort that defines us, but the small choices we make consistently.
Consider the mother who recites Qur’an for five minutes while her children nap. The student who chooses to review one page instead of scrolling endlessly. The worker who pauses for dhikr between tasks. These are not grand gestures, but they are steps. They build resilience, they nurture sincerity, they keep the heart alive.
Yet small steps can feel heavy. Waking up for Fajr when you are exhausted. Choosing honesty when a lie would be easier. Holding back anger when frustration rises. These moments rarely feel heroic. They feel ordinary, sometimes even unnoticed. But Allah sees them. The Qur’an reminds us that not even the weight of a mustard seed escapes His knowledge.
So how do we make these small steps easier and more sustainable?
- Anchor them in intention: Remind yourself why you are doing it. Waking for Fajr is not just about discipline; t is about answering Allah’s call.
- Break them down: Instead of aiming for an hour of study, commit to ten minutes. Instead of memorising a surah in one sitting, focus on two ayat.
- Pair them with daily routines: Recite dhikr while commuting. Read Qur’an before sleep. Make dua while cooking.
- Track consistency, not perfection: Missed a day? Return the next day. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if small.
- Celebrate progress: Acknowledge the effort. Thank Allah for the ability to take even one step.
- Seek support: Share your goals with a friend, spouse, or mentor. Encouragement makes small steps feel lighter.
Growth also means accepting that some days the steps will be smaller than others. There will be days of fatigue, distraction, or disappointment. On those days, the step may simply be turning back to Allah with a short dua, or choosing patience instead of despair. That too is growth.
So perhaps the question is not, Am I doing enough? but rather, Am I still moving? Am I still choosing, in small ways, to return to Allah, to honor my values, to nurture my soul? If the answer is yes, then growth is happening, even if it feels slow.
And so we close with a do’aa: Ya Allah, grant us strength in the small steps, patience in the slow days, and sincerity in every effort. Let our ordinary choices become extraordinary in Your sight, and let our persistence draw us closer to You.
Reflection Activity
Take 5 minutes today to pause and write down:
- One small step you already take that connects you to Allah.
- One small step you would like to add to your routine.
- One reminder you will use to stay consistent.
Keep this note somewhere visible. Let it be a gentle nudge that growth is not about perfection, but about persistence.
