03 Jun The Discipline of Becoming
Growth is rarely dramatic. It does not announce itself with fanfare or arrive in a single moment of clarity. More often, it unfolds quietly, through repetition, through persistence, through the discipline of returning to what matters even when the results are not yet visible. To become is not to transform overnight – it is to shape oneself deliberately, patiently, and with sincerity.
We live in a culture that prizes speed and spectacle. Achievements are measured by how quickly they are reached, how visibly they are displayed, how loudly they are applauded. Yet the Qur’an reminds us that Allah values constancy more than grandeur. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the most beloved deeds are those done consistently, even if small. This is the paradox of growth: it is not the sudden breakthrough that defines us, but the sustained rhythm of small, sincere acts.
Personal growth begins with honesty. It requires confronting the gap between who we are and who we aspire to be. That confrontation is uncomfortable, but it is also liberating. To admit our limits is not weakness; it is the beginning of wisdom. It is the recognition that we are works in progress, and that progress itself is a form of worship.
It also requires patience. Change is rarely linear. There will be days of progress and days of regression, moments of clarity and moments of confusion. The discipline of becoming is not about perfection but about persistence. It is about returning, again and again, to the path—even when the pace is slow, even when the steps are small.
And it requires hope. Hope is not naïve optimism; it is a spiritual discipline. It is the conviction that Allah’s mercy is greater than our mistakes, that His guidance is near, and that every sincere effort is seen. Hope transforms regret into renewal. It turns “I failed” into “I tried, and I will return.”
The discipline of becoming is not glamorous. It will not always be noticed or celebrated. But it is the work that shapes the soul. It is the quiet strength that builds resilience, the hidden sincerity that draws us nearer to Allah, and the steady rhythm that turns ordinary days into extraordinary journeys. To embrace this discipline is to accept that growth is not an event but a lifelong practice, a deliberate shaping of the self in the light of divine mercy.
Ya Allah, grant us honesty to confront ourselves, patience to persist in small steps, and hope that keeps us striving. Let our becoming be a path of nearness to You.
